The concept for the West Kentucky Percussion Festival originated in November of 2014. The festival was generated by the need of area high school concert percussion ensembles to have a place to perform outside their local high school band concert. Rick Gardner (Former Director of Percussion at Muhlenberg County High School) had the original idea and after discussing with other band staff and Felix Martin Hall, made the official announcement to members of the KMEA 3rd district. The festival concept was well received and applications by performing ensembles were submitted very quickly. The registration had to be closed in a few short days. With the overwhelming response by local schools it was decided to make the festival into day long percussion festival similar to other “Days of Percussion.” Six clinicians, plus university solo performers were contacted and the West Kentucky Percussion Festival was officially formed. The first festival was held on March 14, 2015 and all involved considered it great success.
The festival is hosted by the Muhlenberg County Band Boosters and the Muhlenberg County Percussion Students.
The festival is held in the beautiful Felix E. Martin Jr. Hall.
