The 2024 West Kentucky Percussion Festival Honors Percussion Ensemble and Drumline

The drumline and concert ensemble will consist of Kentucky high school students that have been recommended by their directors to participate in this event.

The event will start on Friday, March 22, at 9:00 AM. Rehearsals will continue throughout the day ending around 8:00 PM. The drumline will perform as part of the Edward Freytag marching percussion clinic and the Honors Percussion Ensemble will perform with Dr. Christopher Butler on Saturday, March 23, during the West Kentucky Percussion Festival. The schedule for Saturday will be posted two weeks prior to the event.

Selected students must be accompanied by a director or parent/guardian.  There will be a $30.00 folder fee for the participants that will include a t-shirt and two meals on Friday. Additional information concerning participants and payment will be sent to those accepted to the ensembles.

Selection Process:

The first goal in the selection process is to have students from as many different schools as possible.  A maximum of 50 students will be selected. (25 for drumline and 25 for concert ensemble)

The nomination deadline is November 3, 2023, or after 25 high schools have submitted nominations. or after 80 nominations are received.  It is expected that the ensemble will be full before that date so please send your nominations as soon as possible. Invitations will be sent to the high schools that have participated in the previous festivals.  After those schools have been contacted the nomination process will be open to everyone.  All applications will be reviewed in the order they are received.  You may submit as many nominees as you wish, but it is most likely that we will have only two or three  students from each school.

All drumline applicants must be willing to play any instrument in the marching batterie ensemble, including snare drum, tenors or bass drum. The student’s instrument choice will be considered when making the selections, however, students choosing snare or tenors must be willing to play bass drum if those positions have not been filled. Nominees for the ensemble with Christopher Butler should be proficient in mallet performance . The ensemble may also have openings for a bass player and a drum set player. WE MUST ASSUME THAT STUDENTS NOMINATED WILL ATTEND IF SELECTED. Please check with them prior to nomination. Also, it should be noted that attendance at ALL rehearsals is expected. It would be quite unfair to both the clinician and other students to have someone miss evening rehearsals or the performance for other events. The honors ensemble members will be responsible for any expenses that may incurred for the two days, including other meals, transportation and lodging, if needed.
