Selection Process

The 2018 West Kentucky Percussion Festival Honors Drumline

The drumline will consist of Kentucky high school students that have been recommended by their directors to participate in this event.

The event will start on Friday, March 23, at 10:00 AM.  Rehearsals will continue throughout the day. The ensemble will perform as part of the Dr. Eric Willie marching percussion clinic on Saturday, March 24, during the West Kentucky Percussion Festival.  The schedule for Saturday will be posted a few weeks prior to the event.

These students will spend the day with Dr. Willie learning technique, warmups, exercises and music for the clinic/performance.  Read more about Dr. Willie at

Selected students must be signed in by a director or parent/guardian.  There will be a $25.00 folder fee for the participants that will include a t-shirt and two meals on Friday.

Selection Process:

The first goal in the selection process is to have students from as many different schools as possible.  A maximum of 24 students will be selected.  Four of these students will be selected as alternates and will be permitted to attend the Friday rehearsals.

The nomination deadline is November 30, 2017.  It is expected that the ensemble will be full before that date so please send your nominations as soon as possible. Invitations were sent to the 11 high schools that have participated in the 3 previous festivals.  Those schools have been contacted and  the nomination process is now open to everyone.  All applications will be reviewed in the order they are received.  You may submit as many nominees as you wish, but it is most likely that you will have only one or two students from each school.

All applicants must be willing to play any instrument in the marching batterie ensemble, including snare drum, tenors, bass drum or cymbals.  The student’s instrument choice will be considered when making the selections, however, students choosing snare or tenors must be willing to play bass drum or cymbals if those positions have not been filled.  WE MUST ASSUME THAT STUDENTS NOMINATED WILL ATTEND IF SELECTED. Please check with them prior to nomination.   Also, it should be noted that attendance at ALL rehearsals is expected. It would be quite unfair to both the clinician and other students to have someone miss evening rehearsals and concerts for other events.  The honors ensemble members will be responsible for any expenses that may incurred for the two days, including other meals, transportation and lodging, if needed.
